Turang Groves

Turang Groves

Not far from the town of Balkhash, there are several groves of relict turanga (Asian poplar). Such a place, in particular, is located in the lower reaches of the Tokyrau River, in the area of the Orta-Deresyn village. The Asiatic poplar is especially resistant to cultivation in sandy and saline soils, and its groves serve as a life-saving refuge during the heat of summer and severe drought. The tree itself has been considered sacred by the Kazakhs since ancient times, and cutting it down has always been a great sin. Turanga, thanks to its powerful root system, immersed in the soil to a depth of 50 meters, is capable of pumping water from under the sands and can survive in the harshest conditions of the Northern Balkhash region, where in summer almost all living things dries up.
